Spiritual Wellness
The name Shalem comes from a Hebrew word meaning 'to be or make whole or complete'. It is this vision of wholeness that Shalem seeks to be. Wholeness in being. Wholeness in health. And wholeness in relationship to God.
We recognize that each resident comes to Shalem on their own faith journey and spiritual needs are different for everyone. At Shalem, we are committed to being a Christian, God-honoring community, implementing a faith-focused approach in all we do.
Grounded in God’s grace and love, at Shalem spiritual care is imbedded and practiced at all levels of the organization. We provide spiritual care in a context that builds relationships and community, while embracing diversity and each other’s uniqueness.
We also have specific activities that encourage spiritual care and encouragement:
- Chapel Services. Chapel services are held weekly, Wednesday afternoons, led by pastors from a number of different denominations including, Lutheran, Baptist, Christian Reformed and Alliance.
- Hymn Sings. Residents meet every Sunday evening to sing the classic hymns of our faith. This spiritual practice builds unity and is a source of comfort and healing for residents.
- Chaplaincy. We recognize aging often brings loss, grief and struggles. Residents seeking one-on-one spiritual care will be connected with compassionate pastoral chaplains, who will meet with residents for encouragement and prayer.
- Christian Counselling. For those residents struggling with more serious emotional, mental or spiritual challenges, access to professional Christian counselling is available.
